Troy’s Tolver Dozier Advances to NCAA Championship; Trojans Finish 10th

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – Troy senior Tolver Dozier holed out from 138 yards away on the first playoff hole of the NCAA New Haven Regional to earn an individual berth into the NCAA Championship field. Doizer's eagle on the par-4 first hole came after he birdied three of his final four holes to force the playoff.
"It's crazy," Dozier told the New Haven Register. "I was just trying to hit it close and I got lucky that it went in. It's pretty cool. It's my senior year and it's kind of icing on the cake."
Dozier bogeyed the par-3 fifth, which put him two shots back with four holes to play. After tying Ohio State's Addison Coll with a birdie on No. 7, Coll drained a 20-foot birdie on the par-3 ninth in the paring before Dozier's. The native of Dothan, Ala., stuck his tee shot on No. 9 with a six iron to within 4-feet of the hole, calmly waited for three other shots before him and drained his birdie attempt to force the playoff.
He finished his round at 3-under par and the tournament at 4-under on the par-70 track to finish in a tie for second place. Dozier carded 14 birdies over the 54-holes, which were tied for the most in the field. He was also the best in the field on the par-4s as he played them to a tune of 7-under-par.
The Trojans shot 2-under-par 279 as a team, which was their best round of the tournament by 11 strokes. Troy entered the Regional as the No. 10 seed and finished it's first NCAA postseason event since 1995 in 10th place. The Trojans closed strong as their four counter scores shot 5-under par on the back nine of the final round.
Jared Bettcher and Clayton Vannoy turned in cards of even par – their bests of the tournament – to finish in a tie for 46th and 57th place, respectively. Bettcher carded three birdies on the day, with one on each of the different par numbers. Vannoy sat 2-over after seven holes, but birdied three of his next four to move to 1-under. The Trojan sophomore added one more birdie on the par-4 sixth hole around two bogeys to shoot even par.
Jake Tucker shot his third straight round of 1-over-par 71 and finished in a tie for 25th place overall. Tucker rebounded from a double-bogey on his opening hole to birdie the par-3 No. 11 before making the turn at 2-over. Following a bogey to move to 3-over after 10 holes, Tucker birdied two of his final seven holes to finish 1-over on the day.
Luke Moser ended the tournament in 70th place after carding a 5-over-par 75 on Saturday. Moser picked up three birdies during his round to go along with a pair of double-bogeys and three bogeys.
South Florida won the team title after shooting 14-under-par over the 54 holes. San Diego State finished 14 shots back of the Bulls, while San Diego State, Oklahoma State, Vanderbilt and LSU all advanced to the NCAA Championship. Oklahoma State's Jordan Niebrugge finished three shots ahead of Dozier, Coll and Vandy's Matthias Schwab to claim the individual title; Niebrugge shot a course record 8-under 62 in the second round.
The NCAA Championship takes place May 29-31 at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. Tolver, the five other individual qualifiers and 30 teams will play 54 holes of stroke play before the top eight teams advance to match play.
