Troy and Dozier in the Mix to Advance Heading Into Final Round of NCAA Regional
5/15/2015 8:32:00 PM | Golf (M)
NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – No. 57 Troy is just eight shots out of an advancing slot and Trojan senior Tolver Dozier is just one shot back of an individual berth to the NCAA Championship following Friday's round two of the NCAA New Haven Regional at the Course at Yale.
Dozier reached 3-under-par three different times during his round as he carded five birdies on the day. Back-to-back birdies on No. 2 and No. 3 gave the Trojan senior a quick 2-under-par and then a nice putt on No. 7 pushed his card to 3-under. Dozier traded a bogey for a birdie over his next nine holes before bogeys on No. 16 and No. 17 ended his round at 1-over.
The native of Dothan, Ala., is 1-under through 36 holes and is just one shot behind Northwestern's Dylan Wu for the lone individual berth into the NCAA Championship for teams outside of the top five.
The Trojans matched their opening round card as they shot a 9-over 289 in Friday's second round. Troy is eight shots back of No. 20 Oklahoma State for fifth place; the Cowboys' round was saved by a course record 8-under-par 62 by individual leader Jordan Niebrugge. No. 16 South Florida will carry a 9-shot lead over No. 45 NC State into the final round, while No. 32 San Diego State and No. 5 Vanderbilt round out the top four.
Jake Tucker shot his second straight 1-over-par 71 as he finished his round with a pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys. The Trojan senior was 2-over-par after a bogey on No. 10, but responded with birdies on the par-3 No. 13 and the par-5 No. 16 around a bogey on No. 15.
Troy is tied with South Florida for the most birdies in the field with 28 over the 36 holes thanks to nine from Dozier, five from Tucker, Jared Bettcher and Luke Moser and four from Clayton Vannoy.
Bettcher shaved three shots off his opening round score as he finished with a 3-over-par 73. Bettcher birdied the par-4 No. 12 around four bogeys.
Vannoy carded a 6-over 76 for the second straight day, but his final card should have been two strokes lower. The sophomore was charged with a quadruple-bogey on the par-4 fourth after a controversial ruling. Vannoy's tee shot was hit into a hazard and was verified by the two other players in his pairing; however, a rules official declared a lost ball and Vannoy was forced to re-tee.
Moser rounded out the field for the Trojans following a rough round that ended with a 12-over 82.
Troy, North Texas and Ohio State will be the first teams on the course for Saturday's final round with a 6:30 a.m. (CDT) tee time on No. 10.
