MOBILE, Alabama – Nick Masonia bunted a ball perfectly down the first base line as Shaw Pinnell scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning as the Troy baseball team defeated South Alabama 2-1 on Thursday at Stanky Field.
Â
In a game that was predicted to be a low-scoring pitchers' duel, Troy's Grant Bennett and South Alabama's Kevin Hill produced a gem. Bennett allowed one run in 7 1/3 innings and struck out six while Hill lasted six innings, fanning six but also walked seven.
Â
The Trojans (30-23, 18-10 Sun Belt) opened the scoring in the fourth. Masonia singled to start the frame and moved up to second when Clay Holcomb walked. Tripp Calhoun then advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Matt Sanders then drove a 1-1 pitch to left-center field, allowing Masonia to tag and score.
Â
Troy was able to get two runners on base in four of the first five innings, but Hill wiggled out of trouble each time. Trojan hitters were able to effectively work the count against Hill as nine of the 28 batters the senior right-hander faced went to a full count.
Â
South Alabama (34-19, 19-9) tied the game in the sixth when Daniel Martinez doubled home Adam Ballew from second with no one out. Troy's ace was able to induce a ground ball and a fly ball before getting a strikeout to end the inning. Ballew led off the frame with a walk off Bennett. It was the only inning in the game in which the Jaguars leadoff hitter reached base.
David Hall started the 10th by reaching on an error. Pinnell entered as a pinch runner and stole second base. After he advanced to third on a ground ball, Masonia drove him in on the squeeze bunt.
Â
Bennett also worked out of a jam in the third. Cole Billingsley doubled with one out and quickly stole third. However, Bennett got a strikeout and a fly out to end the threat.
Â
Ben Tidwell (2-2) took over with one out in the eighth and tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Jeremy McGowan made his 77th career appearance in the bottom of the 10th and recorded his sixth save of the season. The Troy pitching staff has allowed just one run over the last 27 innings.
Â
Logan Hill finished the contest with three hits but was stranded each time. Troy left 13 runners on base while South Alabama beached 11.
Â
Troy still needs to win both of the remaining games in the series to claim the regular season Sun Belt title. South Alabama needs to win just one be crowned champs.
Â
Game two of the three-game series is set for Friday at 6:30 p.m.
