Trojans Fall in Sun Belt Tournament

TROY, Alabama – The Troy University baseball team couldn't withstand an offensive onslaught as the Trojans fell to UT Arlington 13-5 on Wednesday at Riddle-Pace Field.
The game, which was delayed for nearly two hours due to rain, lasted over three hours and concluded eight minutes after midnight.
UT Arlington struck for three runs in the first inning off Troy starter Lucas Brown. Matt McLean reached on an infield single to leadoff the game. One batter later, Levi Scott doubled off the wall in right field to drive in the game's first run. Brown then walked Jackson Morris before surrendering consecutive RBI singles.
Matt Sanders got things started for the Trojans in the bottom half of the first with his third triple of the season. Reid Long drove him in four pitches later on a sacrifice fly.
In the second inning, senior outfielder Clay Holcomb clubbed his second career home run to cut the deficit to 3-2. Holcomb's only other career home run came against Alabama last season in Pensacola.
It wouldn't take long for the Mavericks to respond, however. After the first two runners reached in the third, Darien McLemore drove in a run with a base hit to left. It appeared as though Brown would work out of the jam after the Trojans turned a double play, but RJ Williams crushed the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for a two-run home run, giving UTA a 6-2 advantage.
With Holcomb at second and Nick Masonia at third in the fourth inning, Tripp Calhoun executed a safety squeeze allowing the runner to score. Matt Sanders singled two pitches later to push Holcomb across and make it a 6-4 game.
UT Arlington (24-30) blew things open in the fifth inning highlighted by a grand slam from Scott. The Mavs scored five runs on five hits in the frame. UTA collected 19 hits in the game.
The Trojans (30-24) will face UL Lafayette in an elimination game at 12:30 p.m. The Ragin' Cajuns fell to Texas State, 8-7, earlier Wednesday.
