NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – No. 57 Troy carded a tournament-high 16 birdies and Tolver Dozier fired an even par round to lead the Trojans to a sixth place tie following the opening round of the NCAA New Haven Regional on Thursday at the Course at Yale.
Troy is tied with No. 45 North Carolina State at 9-over par after the opening 18 holes of play and the Trojans are just three shots behind fifth-place Oklahoma State; the top five teams following 54 holes will advance to the NCAA Championship.
Dozier carded four of Troy's 16 birdies, including a 60-foot putt on the par-4 eighth hole. The senior from Dothan, Ala., made the turn at 2-under after birdies on No. 12 (par-4) and No. 18 (par-5). Dozier entered the final four holes at 1-over par following a double-bogey on No. 5, but birdied No. 6 and No. 8 around a bogey to finish the day with a 70.
Led by a 6-under-par 64 from individual leader Rigel Fernandes, No. 16 South Florida holds a one-shot advantage over Ohio State. No. 32 San Diego State is three shots back in third followed by No. 5 Vanderbilt and No. 20 Oklahoma State.
Jake Tucker is not far behind his fellow senior as he finished the opening round with a 1-over-par 71. The Trojan lefty carded three birdies during his round (No. 5, 7, 16) around four bogeys to sit in a tie for 12th place.
Luke Moser turned in the only under-par back nine for the Trojans as he played the final nine holes to a tune of 1-under par thanks to a pair of birdies and one bogey. Moser opened with a 3-over on the front nine and is tied for 20th place after shooting a 2-over 72.
A pair of Trojans are tied for 54th place after carding matching 6-over-par 76s, but did it in different ways. Jared Bettcher made the turn at 6-over par with a trio of double-bogeys, a bogey and a birdie, but rebounded to play the back nine at even par thanks to three birdies. Clayton Vannoy made the turn at 1-over but played the back nine at 5-over and finished his day with a pair of birdies.
