5/1/2015 10:45:00 PM | Baseball
MONROE, Louisiana – Troy collected 10 hits but stranded 10 runners and grounded into three double plays as the Trojans fell to ULM 4-2 at Warhawk Field on Friday.
Grant Bennett surrendered 10 hits, a season-high, as the Warhawks chipped away at the Trojans' ace. ULM scored on a ground ball in the third, a ground ball and triple in the fourth and a two-out single in the fifth to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Bennett (8-3) struck out just two batters and walked three in the eight-inning outing.
ULM starter Alex Hermeling (4-6) kept Troy batters in check for the majority of the contest, allowing just five hits through the first seven innings.
Troy (25-21, 13-9 Sun Belt) was able to get runners in scoring position in three of the first five innings but failed to score. The Trojans also threatened in the fifth, sixth and were able to get the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth, but double plays ended each inning.
The Warhawks (22-24, 9-13) were led offensively by Keelin Rasch and Spencer Hemphill who finished with two hits each. Anthony Herrera earned his fifth save of the season after pitching the ninth.
TJ Binder saved a run in the first inning as the Troy third baseman made a diving stab on a hard hit grounder from Daniel Springer destined for the left field corner. Binder made the throw to second to get the force out and end the inning.
Reid Long tripled to the gap in right-center to start the eighth for the Trojans. One pitch later, Logan Hill drove him in with a ground ball to second. David Hall and Trevin Hall followed with singles before Nick Masonia lashed a base hit to right to plate a run and cut the ULM lead in half. Long finished the game 3-for-5 including his Sun Belt Conference-leading sixth triple. With the hit, David Hall extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
In the ninth, Peyton Fuller was hit by a pitch and Long singled with one out. Hill, however, grounded into a game-ending double play. Hill singled in the third and has reached base safely in 19-straight games.
Troy and ULM will play game two of the three-game series Saturday at 6 p.m.
