NEW ORLEANS – Just one day after leading the Troy men's tennis team to the Sun Belt Championship, Troy head coach Scott Kidd has been named the Sun Belt Coach of the Year, the league office announced on Monday.
Â
Kidd, in his second year at the helm of the Trojans, led the team to a 25-6 record, an undefeated record in Sun Belt matches, the No. 1 seed at the Sun Belt Championships, and finally, the second Sun Belt Championship in program history.
Â
"I'm honored to receive this award," Kidd said. "It's truly amazing representing Troy University. All of these great accomplishments would not be possible if it wasn't for my team, coaching staff and Troy University.
Â
"Our work isn't complete yet, and now we must prepare for the NCAA Tournament. I also want to say thank you to the Sun Belt coaches for honoring me with this award."
Â
Troy's 25 wins have set a school record and are the most by any NCAA Division I team this season. After an 8-17 record last season, the Trojans have improved by 17 wins this season, the best improvement in the nation.
Â
The Trojans are currently ranked 60th in the nation, but likely to move up when this week's rankings are released on Tuesday. The Trojans beat three ranked teams this season while four of their six losses came to ranked teams.
Â
Kidd coached five players to All-Sun Belt honors this season and has now coached seven All-Sun Belt performers in his two seasons at Troy.
Â
In his 15-year coaching career, Kidd has won nine national championships, including five in his six seasons as women's head coach at AUM and one in his two seasons as men's head coach at AUM. Kidd also won two national championships in his three seasons as an assistant coach at AUM.
Â
An Elba, Ala., native, Kidd was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year five times while at AUM. Before coming to Troy, he spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the Clemson women's team, helping the Tigers to three NCAA Regionals and two Sweet 16 appearances.
Â
With the Sun Belt Championship, Kidd and the Trojans receive the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Championships, which begin at 16 on-campus regionals on May 8. The Trojans' will learn their opponent and destination on April 28 when the selection show airs on NCAA.com at 5:30 p.m.
