Troy Softball Takes Series From Georgia Southern in Doubleheader Sweep

STATESBORO, Georgia – The Troy softball team won its third Sun Belt series of the season on Saturday as it swept Georgia Southern, 7-1, in game one and 7-3, in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at Eagle Field.

Troy (28-19, 10-7 Sun Belt) scored 14 combined runs for both games. Michelle Phelps and Amanda Winters went a combined 4-for-7 with a home run and six RBIs on the day.

Morgan Robinson drove in all the runs on the day for Georgia Southern (12-31, 4-16 Sun Belt), as she went 3-for-7 on the day with a three-run home run in the second game and an RBI single in the first game.

With the game tied at one in the top of the fourth inning, Amanda Winters singled home Ashley Rainey, who reached base on a lead off triple and gave Troy a 2-1 lead. Winters came around to score on a Kate Benton walked with the bases loaded. Hannah Day drove in two with a single up the middle and gave the Trojans a 5-1 lead.

The Trojans tacked on two more runs as Winters hit a two-run dinger down the left field line for her eighth home run of the season.

Jaycee Affeldt (14-8) got the win for the Trojans as she pitched a complete game, her seventh of the year. Affeldt only allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out five.

Benton scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning on a ground out from Becca Hartley.
Â
Five different Trojans got at least one hit in the game. Benton and Winters both had two and Rainey had three as she went 3-for-4 in the game.

Troy took a two-run lead in the top of the first inning as Becca Hartley drove in Benton for the first run of the game and Heather Felt, the Georgia Southern pitcher, walked Khadija Neely with the bases loaded that scored the second.

Michelle Phelps tacked on another run in the third inning as she drove in Hannah Day, who reached on a single. Two batters later, Heather Johnston singled up the middle and drove in two to put the Trojans up, 5-0.

Sara Mock (4-8) picked up the win as she came in to pitch the final four innings of the game, didn't allow a hit and struck out one. Rainey got the start and pitched three innings and struck out four.
