Troy, UTA Split Doubleheader

ARLINGTON, Texas – Troy split a doubleheader against UT Arlington on Saturday dropping the first game 15-4 before bouncing back to claim game two 7-6 at Clay Gould Ballpark. The Trojans (21-19, 10-7 Sun Belt) will look to take the rubber game over UTA (16-21, 7-10) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
UT Arlington 15, Troy 4
The Mavericks scored six runs in the second inning and never looked back en route to a 15-4 win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.
Reigning Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week Grant Bennett (7-2) struggled in five innings of work. The junior right-hander surrendered season-high seven runs on seven hits. Five consecutive hitters reached base against Bennett in the second as the Mavericks struck for six runs in the frame.
Troy responded in the third with two-out RBI singles from David Hall and Trevin Hall. David Hall finished the game 3-for-4 to record his 34th career multi-hit game.
UTA pounded 17 hits including four from catcher Brady Cox. Jackson Morris and Christian Hollie collected three hits each.
Troy took an early 1-0 lead on a fielder's choice from Matt Sanders in the second to score Trevin Hall. Hall doubled to leadoff the inning. Peyton Fuller doubled in the seventh and later score on a single from Reid Long for the Trojans fourth run.
TROY 7, UT Arlington 6
Troy carved out a comfortable 7-0 lead just to watch UT Arlington storm back in the eighth inning as the Trojans squeaked out a 7-6 decision in game two.
Lucas Brown (4-1) was phenomenal for seven innings but hit a wall in the eighth as the Mavericks struck for six runs on seven hits in the frame. Brown had shutout UTA for seven inning scattering four hits prior to the eighth.
Troy opened the scoring in the second when Trevin Hall scored on a UT Arlington fielding error. TJ Binder later doubled home David Hall to give the Trojans a 2-0 advantage.
In the third, Hoke Granger led off with a single and scored on the next pitch as Logan Hill smashed a double to right field. Bert Givens followed with an RBI single while Matt Sanders drove in the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
Hill struck again with two outs in the sixth with a two-RBI single to extend the Trojans lead to 7-0.
UTA used six singles in the eighth to chase Brown from the game. Jeremy McGowan made his 72nd career appearance, recording the final six outs to earn his fifth save of the season.
Hill, TJ Binder and Shaw Pinnell all finished with two hits each.
