Trojans Squander Early Lead, Fall to UT Arlington in Series Final
4/19/2015 4:46:00 PM | Baseball
The Trojans (21-20, 10-8 Sun Belt) opened the game strong, scoring four runs with two outs in the first inning. Logan Hill singled to get things started. David Hall reached on a fielding error before Nick Masonia, TJ Binder and Matt Sanders all drove home runs with singles.
Reid Long and Hill hit back-to-back doubles in the second with two outs while David Hall drove in a run with a single to extend Troy's lead to 6-0.
UT Arlington (17-21, 8-10) began to chip away in the bottom of the second. One batter after Eric Tate and Brady Cox singled, RJ Williams lofted a fly ball into shallow right field that dropped between Long and Sanders for a two-RBI double. Travis Sibley hit a home run to leadoff the third and Tate later plated another run on a sacrifice fly. The Mavericks exploded for five runs in the third inning to take the lead. UTA scored five or more runs in an inning four times over the weekend. Troy pitchers surrendered 46 hits in the three games.
Offensively, Troy was productive as well recording double-digit hits in all three contests. The series loss snaps a string of four consecutive Sun Belt Conference series victories for the Trojans.
Austin Crook got the start on the mound and went three innings allowing five runs on eight hits but did not factor in the decision. Corey Childress (2-3) took the loss after surrendering seven runs in 4 2/3 innings of work.
Masonia finished the game 3-for-5 while Long, Hill, David Hall and Matt Sanders recorded two hits each. Cameron Sanders drove in Troy's seventh run of the game in the sixth with a pinch-hit RBI ground out.
The Trojans will look to bounce back on the road as the team travels to take on Kennesaw State on Wednesday.
