4/14/2015 4:56:00 PM | Golf (W)
LOXLEY, Alabama – For the second straight day, heavy rain and lightning forced golfers off the course at the Steelwood Country Club as teams attempted to play the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Women's Golf Championship.
Troy, the defending Sun Belt champions, currently leads the field at 11-over par with all five Trojans through at least 12 holes of the opening round that began Monday following a near three-hour delay. Based on posted scores, Texas State and UALR are tied for second at 14-over par – both sets of Trojans and the Bobcats are in the same pairing.
Sydney Conrad sank birdies on No. 9 and No. 11 to move to 2-over par on the day through 14 holes, while Fátima Fernández Cano (12), Becca Horner (15) and Langley Vannoy (14) are all 3-over par through their respective holes. Taylor McGraw is 6-over par after her first 13 holes after she birdied her final hole before play was suspended.
The Trojans are the highest-ranked team in the field coming in at No. 83 in the latest Golfstat rankings. Teams will attempt to resume play Wednesday at 8 a.m., however the forecast is for more rain throughout Tuesday evening and into the morning.
South Alabama (+18) and ULM (+21) are the only two teams who have finished 18 holes of what was scheduled to be a 54-hole tournament to decide the Sun Belt's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships.
