TROY, Alabama – The defending Sun Belt Conference champion Troy women's golf team returns to the Steelwood Country Club this week as the league once again converges on Loxley, Ala., for the Sun Belt Conference Championships Monday thru Wednesday.
The Trojans lead a pack of three Sun Belt schools ranked in the top 80 as Troy checks in at No. 83 followed by Texas State (85) and UALR (86). Sophomore Fátima Fernández Cano will also look to defend a title as the reigning Sun Belt Freshman of the Year won the individual title last year on a playoff hole.
Cano enters the Sun Belt Championships ranked 169th nationally, which is 72 spots higher than the league's next closest golfer, UALR's Stina Resen. Recently named the Golfweek National Golfer of the Week, Cano is coming off a school record 6-under 210 at the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate. The victory was her second of the season and lowered her season stroke average to 73.29, which would set the single-season school record by 1.67 strokes.
Second-year head coach Bart Barnes will carry a solid lineup from top to bottom with him as all five Trojans rank among the top 18 in the Sun Belt; Texas State's No. 5 player ranks 23rd in the league, while UALR's checks in at No. 24.
Taylor McGraw, who finished ninth at last year's Sun Belt Championships, ranks seventh in the league after finishing the regular season with a 76.04 stroke average. McGraw has a pair of top 10 finishes this year and placed in the top 25 in half of Troy's eight tournaments on the year.
Langley Vannoy will look to build on a final round 73 at the Panther Intercollegiate as she carries a 76.42 stroke average into the Sun Belt Championships. Vannoy, who ranks 11th in the league, has three top 25 finishes on the year.
Coming off a 12th place finish at the Panther Intercollegiate, Sydney Conrad enters the league championship with a 77.61 stroke average, while Becca Horner enters the championship with a 77.81 stroke average. Horner played a key role in Troy's title last season as she finished in eighth place after shooting an 11-over 227.
The Trojans will be in the final grouping on the course Monday, as they will tee off beginning at 9:40 a.m. along with UALR and Texas State. Live scoring will be available on TroyTrojans.com.
