Â
NEW ORLEANS – The Troy men's tennis team has earned the No. 1 seed at the upcoming Sun Belt Championships, the league office announced on Tuesday. The six-team tournament is set to begin on Friday at the City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center in New Orleans.
Â
With the No. 1 seed, the Trojans receive a bye into the semifinals and will play on Saturday at 3 p.m. Troy will play the winner Friday's match between No. 4 Georgia Southern and No. 5 UL Lafayette.
Â
Troy, seeded No. 60 in this week's ITA National Team Rankings, last earned a No. 1 seed in a conference tournament in 2005, its final season in the Atlantic Sun. Troy's highest previous seed in a Sun Belt tournament came in 2010 when the Trojans were the No. 2 seed and went on to win their only Sun Belt Championship.
Â
With the No. 1 seed, Troy (23-6) is just two wins away from an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Troy has made just one previous NCAA Tournament appearance, that coming in 2010 following the Sun Belt Championship.
Â
The Trojans have been ranked in the ITA National Team Rankings in each of the last seven weeks, including a season-high No. 57 rank. The Trojans have played four of the other five teams in the tournament, going 4-0 against those teams. Troy has not played UL Lafayette.
Â
UT Arlington is the tournament's No. 2 seed and also received a bye into Saturday's semifinals. The Mavericks will face the winner of No. 3 South Alabama and No. 6 Appalachian State.
Â
Live stats and live audio for the tournament will be available through SunBeltSports.org. For more information on Troy Athletics, visit TroyTrojans.com. Fans can also find Troy on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat by searching for Troy Athletics.
