Alexander Earns All-Sun Belt Conference Honors

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – Niata Alexander, Troy track and field's standout freshman, earned a spot on the All-Sun Belt team for the women's 400-meter dash, the conference office announced Wednesday.

"Niata Alexander is a tough competitor," said director of track and field Marc Davis. "She approaches every race in a such a mature way that it's hard to believe she's only a freshman. The future is definitely bright for her."

In the 2015 indoor season, Alexander, a Douglasville, Ga., native, posted the third-best mark in the women's 400-meter dash final at the Sun Belt Championship, clocking in at 55.67 seconds, which set a new personal record.

In her qualifier for the 400m, Alexander won her heat with a time of 56.54 seconds that placed her third overall in the conference meet.

Alexander also had an impressive finish in the 200-meter dash as she posted the fourth-best mark in the preliminaries with a time of 24.33 seconds, the fifth best in all of conference play. Her sprint earned the best time in her heat, as she set another personal record for herself.

In her freshman campaign, Alexander picked up seven top-five finishes in 10 different races.

Throughout the indoor season, Alexander has shown strides of improvement. In her first outing as a Trojan, Alexander placed sixth in the 400m dash with a time of 56.17 seconds. She also displayed her speed in the 200m race, earning the fourth-best time at 24.87 seconds.

Then, at the Art and Linda UNC Open, Alexander picked up her first collegiate win in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 56.71.

At the Samford Invitational, Alexander closed out the indoor season setting a new personal record of 55.94 seconds in the 400-meter dash, which earned her fourth place as she posted the then-second-best time in the Sun Belt.

The outdoor track and field squad hits the road for Mobile, Ala., as it heads to in-state rival South Alabama for the Jaguar Invitational on Saturday, March 7. The field events kick off the meet beginning at 1 p.m., while the hurdles are set to start at 2 p.m., and the running events slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
