GREENVILLE, S.C. – Paced by a 3-under from Luke Moser, No. 34 Troy is in third place following the opening round of the Furman Intercollegiate held Friday at the Furman University Golf Course.
Troy battled two different courses on the front and back nines as all five Trojans played the opening nine holes to a tune of 5-under par, while the back nine saw a team total of 9-over par. When the dust settled, Troy's four counter scores equaled an even par 288.
Teams were sent onto the course in two waves and the morning group faced cold temperatures and rain, while the afternoon group had more favorable playing conditions. Five of the top seven teams following day one played in the afternoon wave, while seven of the bottom 10 teams played in the morning.
The Trojans were the first team on the course and got off to a blazing start as they sat 6-under following the opening two holes, including an eagle from Jared Bettcher and a pair of birdies from Moser.
Moser, who is tied for third place, made the turn at 2-under and reached 4-under thanks to an eagle on No. 12 as he holed out from 130 yards on the par 4. He added another birdie on No. 16 around a pair of bogeys to finish his day with a 69. Moser's round tied his career best set at The Intercollegiate back in the fall.
Bettcher moved to three under following a birdie on No. 5 before making the turn at 2-over where he remained before back-to-back bogeys on No. 16 and 17. He finished his round even par and is tied for 20th place.
Phillip Brennan sank two birdies on the day, one on the front and one on the back, and finished his day 1-over and tied for 30th place. Tolver Dozier carded birdies on No. 10 and 13 to move to 2-under, but took bogeys on his next four holes to finish the day tied for 44th after shooting a 74. Jake Tucker also ran into late trouble as he went from 1-under to 4-over in a span of five holes; he ended the day tied for 59th after shooting a 76.
Competing as individuals, Clayton Vannoy carded three birdies and shot a 75 to finish the day tied for 51st place, while Wil Clowdus is tied for 70th after a round of 77 with one birdie.
Troy has a two-shot lead over Sun Belt rival Georgia State and an nine-stroke advantage over No. 31 Virginia Tech. USC-Aiken, the No. 2 ranked team in Division II, shot a 4-under 284 and holds the team lead. Jacksonville is two shots back in second and Troy is four shots back in third.
