TALLAHASSEE, Florida – The Troy University baseball team struggled at the plate as the Trojans fell 2-1 to Florida A&M at Moore-Kittles Field on Wednesday.
Florida A&M (8-15) opened the scoring with two outs in the third inning when Ryan Kennedy singled home AJ Elkins off Troy starter Corey Childress. The freshman right-hander pitched three innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out four. Childress (2-3) was saddled with his third loss of the season.
The Rattlers were able to double its advantage with a solo home run from Michael Birdsong in the sixth. The long ball was just the eighth of the season for the Florida A&M offense.
Troy (11-14) struggled offensively for the second consecutive game. On Tuesday, the Trojans were nearly no-hit by Jacksonville State as Troy didn't pick up its first hit until the ninth inning. The Trojans scattered just five hits on Wednesday.
After being held scoreless over the first eight innings, the Trojans were able to scratch across a run in the ninth and had the tying run at third when the game ended. FAMU closer Ken McDonald hit three consecutive batters to start the ninth. Nick Masonia's ground ball plated Troy's only run but resulted in a double play. The Trojans grounded into three double plays in the contest.
The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Rattlers and was the program's first victory over Troy since 1998. The Trojans fell to 0-6 on the road this season.
Troy returns home over the weekend as Alabama A&M visits Riddle-Pace Field for a four-game series set to begin Friday at 6 p.m.
