TROY, Alabama – For a 20-year-old soccer player, Nicole Harris has been offered the opportunity of a lifetime. Troy's rising junior midfielder will train for one week with the Jamaican Women's National team in Orlando, Florida, beginning March 23.
The training session is part of the team's evaluation processes used to select its national team members who will compete in World Cup qualifying as well as in other international competitions.
"It's an honor, a great opportunity. I'm really excited," Harris said. "Coach (Jason) Hamilton has been really supportive and great through the whole process."
Harris was a member of the Jamaican National U-20 team that competed in the Caribbean Football Union U-20 World Cup in 2013.
The Miami, Florida, native was born in the United States but, due to her father's Jamaican heritage, she is eligible to compete for Jamaica.
In two seasons for Troy, Harris has played in 33 games, making 19 starts and recording two assists.
The Jamaican National Team will play two exhibition games against the National Women's Soccer League side, Boston Breakers during the week.
A standout at Gulliver Prep in Miami, Harris led the Raiders to four unbeaten seasons and a 53-match unbeaten streak. During her prep career, Harris scored 35 goals and posted 43 assists. She also participated in Florida's Olympic Development Program from 2007-12.
