Garrett Wins Second Sun Belt Weekly Award
3/2/2015 1:56:00 PM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Alabama – Troy women's basketball senior Ronita Garrett has been named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. The award is the second of the season for Garrett and the second consecutive for Troy after Ashley Beverly-Kelley won last week's award.
Garrett posted two more double-doubles last week as Troy extended the league's longest active winning streak to seven games with wins over Texas State and Georgia State.
The McCormick, S.C., native opened the week with 24 points and 12 rebounds at Texas State, earning her seventh 20-point game of the season. Then, on her 21st birthday, the senior posted 17 points and 10 rebounds in her final home game at Trojan Arena, helping Troy to a season sweep of Georgia State. She also posted four steals in each game.
Garrett has now posted five straight double-doubles and 20 double-doubles on the season, by far the most in the Sun Belt and the sixth most in the NCAA. She ranks fourth in the Sun Belt in scoring at 16.1 points per game and first in rebounding at 11.1 rebounds per game. Garrett also ranks third in the conference in steals with 2.4 steals per game.
The Sun Belt Conference honor is the second this season for Garrett who also won the award on January 19. It's the fourth of the season for Troy after Caitlyn Ramirez (December 9) and Beverly-Kelley's wins. Garrett is just the second player in Troy history, joining Joanna Harden, to win multiple Sun Belt Player of the Week awards.
Garrett was also named the CollegeSportsMadness.com Sun Belt Player of the Week.
Garrett and the third-place Trojans return to the court on Saturday when they travel to South Alabama for a 2 p.m. regular season finale. A win would give Troy (19-9, 14-5) the fourth 20-win season in the program's 40-year history and extend the Trojans' current winning streak to eight games.
Troy is guaranteed at least the No. 3 at next week's Sun Belt Championships, but could move up to No. 2 with a win on Saturday and losses by Arkansas State in both of its games this week.
