NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – Troy track and field freshman sprinter Sydney Wright has been named Female Track Athlete of the Week, the Sun Belt Conference announced on Wednesday.
"Sydney has developed into a great competitor thus far in her young career," said director of track and field Marc Davis. "She is working hard to become one of the best in this league."
Wright has highlighted the first two weeks of the Trojans' outdoor campaign as she currently leads the conference in both the women's 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash.
In the 200-meter dash, Wright zipped in a time of 24.76 seconds at the Coastal Carolina Coach "O" Invitational to win her second race of the season. In addition to winning the 200m, Wright also set a new personal record of 11.95 seconds in the 100-meter dash for a third-place finish, a race she won the week prior at the Jaguar Opener.
The Columbus, Ga., native also assisted the Trojans on the 4x200m and 4x400m relay teams, earning two top three finishes with both events.
Wright is the first Trojan to earn Track Athlete of the Week since Jordan Landburg did so a year ago and is the first Troy track and field woman to win Track Athlete of the Week since Ja-Courtney Alexander did so in February 2013.
The Trojans hit the road this weekend for the Alabama Relays in Birmingham.
