KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Langley Vannoy carded a tournament-high six birdies to lead the Troy women's golf team in the opening round of the Kiawah Island Spring Classic on Sunday. The Trojans are in second place in the 40-team field and Vannoy is tied for eighth following the opening 18 holes.
The 40 teams were split over two courses Sunday with Troy opening on the more difficult Osprey Point Course. The Trojans will tackle the Oak Point Course for Monday's second round and the top 20 teams will play Osprey Point for the title Tuesday.
Paced by Vannoy's six birdies, the Trojans finished with 11 as a team for the third most in the field. Troy tied with Stetson for the best day on the par 3s as they both finished 1-over as a team for the day.
Vannoy started and finished strong as she birdied four of her first six holes and two of her final four holes. Following a bogey on No. 1, Vannoy dropped in back-to-back-to-back birdies to move to 2-under and a birdie on No. 6 pushed her to 3-under. She made the turn at 1-under and found herself at 1-over following a bogey on No. 14. However, a birdie on No. 15 and No. 16 around a bogey on No. 18 settled Vannoy at even par for the day.
Sydney Conrad and Fátima Fernández Cano ended the day tied for 16th place following a pair of 74s. Conrad made the turn at 2-over par, but quickly rebounded with birdies on No. 10 and No. 14 before a bogey on No. 17. Cano entered the final four holes at 4-over, but sank birdies on No. 15 and No. 17 to close out her round.
Taylor McGraw had one birdie on the day on her way to shooting a 78, while Becca Horner struggled through her opening round before finishing with a 90.
The Trojans will hit the course along with Charleston Southern and Boston at 10:42 and will begin on the back nine.
