Fiery First Half Lifts Troy Past Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Arkansas – The Troy men's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as it defeated Arkansas State, 69-64, at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro, Ark., on Thursday night for its second-straight Sun Belt road victory.

Four Trojans tallied double figures in the win as they were led by Musa Abdul-Aleem who paced Troy with 17 points. Kevin Thomas earned his 12th career double-double with 16 points, shooting 7-of-9 from the floor, while reeling in a game-high 11 rebounds, six of which were on the offensive end of the court. Thomas also tied a career-high with four steals. John Walton III and Wesley Person also scored in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

After a slow start by both squads, Troy (9-12, 4-8) took a 5-4 lead, which it would never relinquish. The Trojans went on a 14-2 run to take an early, 17-6 lead with 11:28 remaining in the first half, in large thanks to Abdul-Aleem who was 4-of-5 from the field, including a perfect 3-of-3 from long range.

Back and forth play ensued as the Trojans were able to take a 17-point lead at 30-13 with 5:29 to play in the first. After buckets by both squads, the Red Wolves were relentless as they went on a 7-0 run of their won to cut into the Trojans lead at 32-22. The run was halted by a long, crucial trey by Person. Back-to-back buckets by Thomas regained a comfortable 42-24 lead at halftime

At the break, Troy was shooting 17-of-33 (51.5 percent) from the field, including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. Abdul-Aleem tallied 15 of his final 17 points in the first, shooting 6-of-11, including 3-of-6 from downtown. Thomas headed into the break shooting 7-of-8 with four offensive boards, six total.

Troy outrebounded Arkansas State, 23-7, adding an impressive 10-1 advantage on the offensive glass. In the paint, Troy held a 22-6 advantage. It also outscored A-State, 14-7 off turnovers and 11-0 on second chance points.

Coming out of the break, Troy extended its lead to 20 points on a quick bucket by Kelton Ford. Walton made a layup with 15:03 remaining to give the Trojans a 49-32 lead.

The Trojans went quiet, as they didn't make a bucket from the floor until the 4:03 mark. Despite the 10-minute halt, free throw shooting by Troy allowed it to hold a 58-45 lead. Back and forth play ensued for the remainder of the contest as Troy escaped with a 69-64 lead.

Sean Gardner, who tallied a game-high 20 points, led Arkansas State (9-13, 4-9). Anthony Livingston earned all 13 of his points in the second half, while reeling in a team-high eight boards. Cameron Golden also earned double-figures with 13 points.
