TROY, Alabama – A catcher's interference call in the 10th inning gave Southern Mississippi the second chance it needed as the Golden Eagles went on to score four runs in the frame and claim a 6-2 victory over Troy on Saturday at Riddle-Pace Field. To help raise money to support troops at home and abroad, both teams wore special camouflage uniforms in the "Hits for Heroes" game.
Â
Southern Miss (4-4-1) earned a leadoff walk off reliever Marc Skinner (1-2) and quickly sacrificed him into scoring position. After an intentional walk put runners on the corners, Skinner got a ground ball for what seemed to be the final out of the inning, but a catcher's interference call loaded the bases and Daniel Keating cleared them with a triple off the wall in right.
Â
Troy's Grant Bennett took a no-hitter into the seventh, while Southern Miss' Cody Carroll didn't allow a hit until the eighth. Bennett surrendered a one-out single in the seventh before Tim Lynch launched an 0-2 pitch over the wall in right field to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead. Jo-El Bennett reached on an infield single in to lead off the eight to get the Trojans in the hit column.
Â
For Grant Bennett, the runs were the first earned runs allowed all season and the first runs of any kind allowed in his last 11 innings on the bump.
Â
Troy (7-3) finally got things going offensively when Nick Masonia and Logan Hill walked to start the bottom of the ninth. After Trevin Hall sacrificed both runners over, David Hall entered the game as a pinch-hitter and lined a 1-0 pitch off the wall in right to tie the game. The Trojans had a chance to win it with the bases loaded and two outs but a strikeout ended the threat and send the game to extra innings.
Â
Despite the lack of hits, Troy was able to get runners on base in the first, second and third innings but double plays ended each threat. Clay Holcomb walked in the third inning and has now reached base in 25 of his last 26 games.
Â
Troy and Southern Miss will play the rubber match of the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
