Trojans’ Late Push Falls Short at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Troy men's basketball team pulled within three with 34.2 seconds left thanks to a 3-pointer by Musa Abdul-Aleem, but was unable to take the final lead as it fell to Texas State, 67-61, at Strahan Coliseum on Thursday night.
Four Trojans earned double figures as Troy was led by John Walton III, who poured in a game-high 16 points, 14 of which came in the second half, as he shoot 6-of-9 from the floor. Kevin Thomas added 14 for the Trojans, shooting 6-of-10 on the night while reeling in a team-high eight rebounds, five on the offensive end of the court.
Wesley Person tallied 13 points, shooting 6-of-14 on the night, 2-of-3 in the second half while Abdul-Aleem chipped in 11 points, in large thanks to his three treys on the night.
Troy (10-17, 5-13) trailed by as many as 12 in the second half as it fought relentlessly to chip away at Texas State's lead throughout the game. With 13:48 on the clock, Troy was trailing Texas State, 46-34, courtesy of three straight free throws.
However, Troy fought tooth and nail to go on a 9-3 run, cutting the Bobcats lead to 49-43. Troy continued to play back and fourth ball, unable to get any closer than six. A trey by Abdul-Aleem cut the lead to three with 34.2 seconds to go, but the Trojans couldn't make the final push.
Both squads got a slow start to open the game. With 14:02 to play in the first, both teams were struggling to find their offensive rhythm as Troy had two points with four turnovers while Texas State scored four points, whilst amassing five turnovers.
The Bobcats found their groove as they went on a 12-0 run, while holding the Trojans scoreless for 4:32 to claim a 17-9 lead. Troy bounced back with back-to-back buckets, which prompted it to go on a 9-3 run, closing the gap to 20-18 with just under eight minutes to go in the first.
Texas State went on a 9-1 run, holding Troy scoreless from the field for four minutes, but a trey by Abdul-Aleem allowed Troy to head into the break trailing 35-27.
At the half, Troy shot 11-of-26 (42.3 percent) from the floor, Texas State shot 13-of-25 (52 percent) in the first half, in large part to its 6-of-8 showing from long range.
Texas State (12-14, 6-11) had two Bobcats scored in double figures. Kavin Tilbury scored 13 points, shooting 3-of-5 from long range, 4-of-8 on the game. Emani Gant, the team's leading scorer, chipped in 11 points, shooting 4-of-8 on the night. Gant also reeled in a game-high 10 rebounds.
Troy shot 24-of-51 (47.1 percent) on the night, in thanks to shooting 13-of-25 (52 percent) in the second half. Texas State shot 49 percent (24-of-49) in the game. Troy outscored Texas State in the paint, 26-22 and outscored the Bobcats in points off turnovers, 17-9. Troy forced 15 turnovers, but gave up 16 itself.
