Troy Baseball Hosts Samford in Midweek Showdown

TROY, Alabama – After a weekend in Florida, the Troy University baseball team returns home to face in-state rival Samford on Tuesday at Riddle-Pace Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

The contest was originally scheduled to be play in Birmingham but was moved due to heavy rain over the weekend. Tickets purchased for the April 14 game against the Bulldogs will be honored for admission. Single-game ticket prices remain unchanged. The second leg of the home-and-home series will be played at Samford.
The Trojans are coming off a 2-1 showing in the Cox Diamond Invitational. Troy fell to Saint Louis 2-1 in Friday's opener before beating North Florida 2-1 on Saturday and routing Nicholls 10-2 in Sunday's finale. The win over North Florida also marked the 700th career NCAA win for head coach Bobby Pierce. Pierce is now just 10 wins shy of pass Chase Riddle as the school's winningest coach.
Freshman Reid Long had a breakout performance on Sunday, batting 3-for-4 with four RBIs. The Marianna, Florida, native didn't hit a home run in his entire high school career, but leads Troy with two this season. Long also leads the team with a .400 average and is third on the club with five RBIs.
Nick Masonia enters the contest riding a seven-game hitting streak, while Clay Holcomb has reached base in 22 of his last 23 games.
Samford took two of three games from Austin Peay over the weekend and enter Tuesday with a 3-3 overall record.
The Bulldogs will send left-hander Eric Wright to the mound. The senior has one relief appearance this season in which he tossed 2 2/3 innings allowing five runs on six hits. Damon Walker paces the team offensively with a .429 average and is second with six RBIs.
Troy will counter with a lefty of its own in Austin Crook. The junior has seen action in two games out of the bullpen, pitching 5 2/3 innings allowing just one earned run on three hits.
The Trojans lead the all-time series against Samford, 38-17, including a 23-4 mark at Riddle-Pace Field.
