First Half Woes Allow UALR To Hold Off Troy, 63-58

TROY, Alabama – First half struggles for the Troy men's basketball team proved to be too much to overcome as it fell to UALR, 63-58, at Trojan Arena on Saturday.
Troy (10-16, 5-12) scored a mere 15 points in the first half, tying its lowest output of the season. UALR quickly jumped out to a 7-3 lead, as Troy was shooting 1-of-8 from the floor. Troy took its first lead with just under 13 minutes to play, but UALR quickly bounced back with a 9-2 run to take a 19-11 lead over Troy.
After both teams were scoreless for over three minutes, UALR scored six straight points to end the half, while Troy didn't make a bucket for just under the final seven minutes of the half as it trailed UALR, 25-15, at the break.
Troy had three players score in double figures, who were led by Bilbo, with 15. Person shot 3-of-5 on the night from 3-point range and 4-of-6 overall on his way to 14 points while Abdul-Aleem chipped in 11, five from the free throw line. Thomas and John Walton III added seven points apiece, while Thomas grabbed a team-high 10 boards.
To open the second half, Person got things started early for Troy as he went on his own 6-0 run to cut UALR's lead to 25-21. UALR countered with back-to-back buckets to give itself a cushion.
After back-and-fourth play, Kevin Thomas appeared to get a big momentum shift with back-to-back buckets of his own as Troy pulled within three at 37-34 with 10:48 to go in the game.
UALR (12-15, 7-10) countered with another run as it outscored Troy 12-1 to own a 14-point lead, its largest of the contest, at 49-35 with just under seven minutes to play.
Free throw shooting by Abdul-Aleem and Christian Harrison, who posted a career-high three points, allowed Troy to go on a 6-0 run, but UALR once again found an answer for every bucket Troy had.
Bilbo, who ended the game with a team-high 15 points, made a late push, sinking two straight treys for Troy, but it wasn't enough as Troy fell to UALR, 63-58.
UALR had three Trojans score in double figures as it was led by Josh Hagins, who paced UALR with 17 points, shooting 7-of-11 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from downtown. On the glass, Maurius Hill and Roger Woods reeled in game-high numbers with 12 and 11 boards, respectively.
In the game, Troy shot 18-of-49 (36.7 percent), including just 5-of-21 (23.8 percent) from beyond the arc. Troy outscored UALR 24-22 in the paint and 14-11 on points off turnovers. However, UALR's bench outscored Troy's 33-4.
Troy next hits the road for San Marcos, Texas, as it faces Texas State on Thursday at Strahan Coliseum. Troy enters half a game behind Texas State in the Sun Belt standings.
