Dias Named Sun Belt Tennis Athlete of Week

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – For the third straight week, a Troy tennis student-athlete has earned a weekly award as men's tennis junior Gabriel Dias was named the Sun Belt Male Tennis Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday.

Dias, a native of Nova Lima, Brazil, posted a 3-0 week in singles play and a 2-0 mark in doubles play as the Trojans went on the road to win three matches last weekend.

Dias started his weekend with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Florida Gulf Coast's Andres Alfonzo. The Trojans won that match, 4-3, snapping the Eagles five-match winning streak that included a win over nationally-ranked Miami.

The junior closed his weekend with straight-set wins at No. 1 singles over Stetson and Bethune-Cookman. The junior also posted a 2-0 doubles record with 6-2 and 6-1 wins over Stetson and Bethune-Cookman, respectively. He and Hassan Ndayishimye were up 5-3 against FGCU when the doubles point was clinched in that match.

The award is the second of Dias' career as he was named Sun Belt Male Tennis Athlete of the Week once last season. For the third straight week a Trojan has won a Sun Belt weekly award as Dias joins Ndayishimye and women's tennis junior Trang Huynh.

Dias and the Trojans return to the court on Friday when they open play in the Troy Trojan Jamboree at the Lunsford Tennis Center. The Troy men will first play on Friday at 10 a.m. against Alabama A&M. The Trojans will close the tournament on Sunday at 2 p.m. against No. 20 Tennessee.
