Trojans Shoot Season Best, But Fall to UL Lafayette in Overtime
2/14/2015 8:04:00 PM | Basketball (M)
TROY, Alabama – The Troy men's basketball team erased a 14-point deficit, shooting a season-best 62 percent from the floor on the night, but was unable to complete the comeback as it fell to UL Lafayette in overtime, 84-80 at Trojan Arena.
Â
"Well, there are some tough ones, but that probably takes the cake," said head coach Phil Cunningham. " I'm proud of the guys and how they fought back and got back into the game, despite being down eight with just over a minute to go. They never gave up. They fought and scrapped and ended up getting into a position to tie it and head into overtime. Kevin (Thomas) makes huge two free throws, just felt like we were in a position to finish it in overtime. We had one bad possession, but I'm proud of how they fought back."
Â
With just 1:03 remaining, the Trojans trailed the Ragin' Cajuns by eight, 73-65. Chris Bilbo, who poured in a career and game high 21 points, sunk seven-straight points to cut the lead to one at 73-72 with 11 seconds remaining.
Â
After a free throw by UL Lafayette's Brian Williams made it a 74-72 lead with eight seconds to play, Kevin Thomas drove to the basket and was fouled. With 0.8 seconds to play, Thomas sunk both to send the game into overtime.
Â
Troy (9-15, 4-11) took its first lead of the contest with 3:38 to play in overtime thanks to a put back by Thomas, 76-75. Abdul-Aleem extended the lead with a layup of his own, but free throw shooting by Shawn Long and back-to-back buckets by Jay Wright gave the Ragin' Cajuns back the lead at 81-80, which the Trojans could not overcome. Long put the game out of reach with two free throws, giving UL Lafayette an 84-80 win.
Â
Four Trojans scored in double figures including Bilbo, who shot 9-of-10 on the night. Thomas earned his 14th career double-double, his 10th of the season, with 14 points, shooting 4-of-5 from the floor, and a game-high 11 rebounds. Abdul-Aleem poured in 17 points, while reeling in eight boards. Wesley Person pitched in 16 points on the night, the freshman's 21st game in double figures.
Â
Coming out of the break, Troy trailed UL Lafayette, 41-35. After trading buckets, the Cajuns went on a 7-0 run to give them a 57-43 lead with 13:02 to play in the game. Back-to-back treys by Person gave Troy momentum as it cut UL Lafayette lead to 57-49.
Â
The Trojans scored seven-straight buckets as they fought relentlessly to trail by eight at 62-56 with just under eight to play in the contest. After back and forth play ensued for a majority of the contest, the Cajuns led 73-65 with 1:33 to play. That is when Troy forced four straight Cajun turnovers and Bilbo scored his seven straight points.
