Wright, Rice Set Personal Records in First Day of Samford Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Troy track and field team is wrapping up their regular indoor season this weekend at the Samford Invitational held at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Troy is facing off against conference foes Appalachian State, Arkansas State, UALR, Georgia State and ULM. The next time these teams will face off will be the Sun Belt Indoor Championship on February 23^rd.

The Trojans started competition on Friday night with the men and women's high jump and 200-meter dash.

Freshman Sydney Wright ran in the 200-meter dash on Friday placing ninth out of a field of 65 competitors, clocking in a new personal-best with 24.99 seconds. Wright will also run in the 60-meter dash on Saturday.

Cameia Alexander and Sierra King also competed in Friday night's 200-meter dash finishing with times of 25.86 seconds and 26.44 seconds, respectively.

Cameron Rice set a new personal best in the 200-meter dash with a 22.57 second mark. Chaun Lynn and Lance Holley also competed in the event finishing in 22.71 seconds and 23.35 seconds, respectively.

Saturday's action will resume at 9 a.m. with the long jump and 60-meter hurdles.

Niata Alexander will run in the women's 400-meter dash on Saturday. The freshman currently leads the Sun Belt rankings in the event with a time of 55.97 seconds. Her performance at the UNC Open has held the first place position in the conference for four weeks.

Thrower Zach Douglas is looking to excel in the men's shot put once again this weekend. Douglas took first place last week at the MTSU Invitational with a 14.74-meter throw. In the first meet of the season Douglas heaved a 15.69-meter toss for a third place finish at the UAB Blazer Invitiational.

Other competitors to keep a watch for are Julia Ostendorf and Samantha Smith, who will compete in the women's 1-mile run for the Trojans. Both runners have had strong seasons thus far, with Ostendorf picking up a pair of runner-up finishes in the 5000-meter and 3000-meter runs, and Smith setting a new personal record in the 5000-meter run at the Blazer Invitational.

Sprinter Benjamin Martin will compete in his first meet of this senior season this weekend, running in the men's 60-meter dash. In the 2014 outdoor season Martin advanced to the NCAA East Preliminaries in the men's 100-meter dash, and ended the season ranked first in the Sun Belt in the event.
