Â
TROY, Alabama – Tyler Roberts and Teddy Ruben led a group of nine Troy players named to 11 spots on the All-Sun Belt football teams announced Wednesday afternoon by the league office.
Â
Roberts was named to the first team as a defensive lineman, while Ruben was a second team selection at wide receiver, all-purpose and return specialist. Offensive lineman Dalton Bennett and safety Montres Kitchens were also selected to the second team, while quarterback Brandon Silvers, running back Brandon Burks, offensive lineman Antonio Garcia and defensive end Rashad Dillard were honorable mention selections. Linebacker William Lloyd was Troy's representative on the league's Newcomer Team.
Â
The All-Sun Belt Teams were selected by a vote of the league's 11 head coaches in addition to a media representative from each school.
Â
Roberts was the leader on a defensive unit that posted the fourth best turnaround in the country in yards per play allowed and the fifth best improvement in tackles for loss per game. A native of Hoover, Ala., Roberts led the Sun Belt in tackles for loss per game and ranked second in sacks per game.
Â
Ruben finished second in the league with 10 touchdown receptions and third overall in receiving yards; he had the most touchdowns receptions in the league among those with at least 575 receiving yards (13 players). The Scottsdale, Ariz., native finished second in the league in all-purpose yards and second in punt return average.
Â
Bennett, a native of Marianna, Fla., played 99 percent of Troy's snaps this season and did so at three different positions. He did not allow a sack all season on an offensive line that ranked second in the league in fewest sacks allowed (not counting Georgia Southern, who attempted just 129 passes all season).
Â
Kitchens led the Trojans in tackles for the second straight season in addition to forcing a pair of fumbles and intercepting two passes. The Waynesboro, Ga., native finished 14th in the league in tackles.
Â
Burks, a senior from Daleville, Ala., became Troy's eighth 1,000-yard rusher after he finished the year with 1,005 yards to go along with seven rushing touchdowns and two touchdown receptions. Silvers, a sophomore from Orange Beach, Ala., finished third in the league with 20 touchdown passes and 216.2 passing yards per game. Garcia, a junior from Atlanta, played almost every snap at left tackle this season and allowed just three sacks all year. Dillard, a junior from Greer, S.C., finished second in the league in sacks in conference games and third overall, in addition to returning a fumble for a touchdown at New Mexico State. Lloyd finished right behind Kitchens for the team lead in tackles and was second in tackles for loss while finishing third in sacks.
