Troy Tennis Enjoys Wildly Successful Day at Clay Court Invite

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Troy men's and women's tennis teams opened play with outstanding performances at the prestigious USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational on Thursday. Giovani Samaha highlighted the day with a win over the tournament's No. 1 seed in an ESPN3 televised match.

Samaha, who is enjoying a great fall season, defeated No. 68 Michael Rinaldi of Florida State, 7-5, 6-3, knocking the tournament's No. 1 seed out of the top singles bracket.

In all, the Troy men enjoyed a 6-1 day at the tournament. Pablo Moreno and Andre Baldo won first round matches in the second singles flight over players from South Carolina and Florida State, respectively.

In doubles play, Moreno and Samaha won over Georgia Tech and play in the quarterfinals on Friday against a duo from Louisville that is the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

The Troy women also enjoyed a great day, highlighted by Jiayuan Xue's straight-set win over highly-touted Peggy Porter of Florida, 7-5, 6-4.

The Troy women picked up three other singles wins as Efriliya Herlina, Nancy Karaky and Luisa Ferrauti picked up big victories over players from BYU, NC State and North Florida, respectively.

In doubles play, Karaky and Sanae Ohta won in the top doubles flight, beating a pair from Old Dominion.

Play continues from the ESPN Wide World of Sports on Friday as brackets move into the second rounds and consolation brackets begin play.
