Â
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Troy men's tennis senior Giovani Samaha advanced to the finals of the qualifying draw at this week's Player's Choice Open in Birmingham, an ITF Futures Event.
Â
Samaha won three matches, all over fellow collegiate players, at the Highland Park Tennis Center in Birmingham and fell just one shy of advancing into the tournament's main draw.
Â
The Beirut, Lebanon native started his week with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jacksonville State's Matheus Chaim in the first round of the 128-player qualifying draw. In the round of 64, Samaha defeated Samford's Jake Faundez, 7-5, 6-3.
Â
Samaha then met Mississippi State's Lucas Sanchez in the round of 32 and defeated the SEC opponent, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (3). With one of eight spots in the main draw on the line, Samaha dropped a three-set match to Samford's Trey Carter, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
Â
However, Samaha's tournament is not done as he and Carter are pairing in the doubles main draw. Fans can check ITFTennis.com for complete results.
Â
Samaha has had a very successful fall season in both singles and doubles. In singles play he was a semifinalist at the ITA Southern Regional Championships. In doubles, he and partner Pablo Moreno picked up a win over the nation's No. 27 duo at the ITA All-American Championships.
