Varnado Garners Sun Belt Player of the Week Honors

TROY, Alabama – Troy freshman Jordon Varnado took home the Sun Belt Student-Athlete of the Week award, the league announced on Tuesday afternoon. Varnado is the first freshman to receive the award to open a season since 1999.

Varnado tallied 47 points and 21 rebounds in his first two games as a Trojan on his way to two straight double-double performances in two Troy victories.

In Troy's win at South Florida, Varnado shot 9-of-17 from the floor on his way to a game-high 21 points. He also reeled in 11 boards, marking the first time a Troy player debuted with a double-double since 2006.

In Troy's home opener against Reinhardt, Varnado secured his second-straight double-double with eight minutes to play in the first half. He finished the game with 26 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Brownsville, Tenn., native is the first Troy freshman with a double-double in his debut since Rob Lewin had 15 points and 12 rebounds in 2000. Lewin finished his career with 1,058 points which ranks 19th in Troy's record books.

In the NCAA, Varnado is currently one of three freshmen with two double-doubles.
