2015 Troy Soccer Season Recap

TROY, Alabama – For the second year in a row Troy (14-4-2) finished in second place of the Sun Belt Conference with a 6-2-1 record. This was the first time in program history that the Trojans have put back-to-back winning seasons together after finishing the 2014 campaign 16-6.

Troy was knocked out of the conference semi-finals in a penalty shootout. The Trojans currently ranked at 61 in the RPI polls, will finish the year ranked in the top 100 RPI for the second time in program history after finishing last season at 72.Â

After watching 29 records broken during the 2014 season, this years group was not outdone as the Troy soccer team set 14 individual career-records, two single-season records and seven team records including season attendance, fewest losses and highest winning percentage for the 2015 season.

With 863 fans attending the home opener against Gardner-Webb, a new school record was set; only to be broken five weeks later when Troy hosted South Alabama that saw 1,365 fans attend the Sun Belt opener making it the most attended Sun Belt game in conference history. Those two matches helped Troy set a new single-season attendance record as well as having the highest attendance in the conference.

For the second season in a row the Troy defense was the best in the Sun Belt Conference and this year ranked nationally in the top 25 in goals against average and save percentage as a team. The Trojans took the 12th spot in save percentage as they closed out the season with a .865 save percentage. The other was goals against average where Troy posted a 0.63, good enough to finish 22nd in the nation. This is the second season in a row the Troy defense has been ranked among the highest in the country as their 13 shutouts in 2014 was good enough for 11th best among all division I programs.

Sophomore Mikki Lewis set the new single-season for goals against average with 0.62 and ranks 27th nationally. She recorded nine shutouts this season, which topped the Sun Belt. The All-Sun Belt First Team selection recorded a .869 save percentage, which is second best in the conference and ranks 14th nationally. Lewis was named Sun Belt Student-Athlete of the Week on October 13.

The Trojans offense saw seven different players score at least two goals in one match for the 2015 season. Troy outscored its opponents 35-13 in the season and outshot its opponents 296-181. The Trojans fired 150 shots that landed on goal and recorded 36 assists this season. The 150 shots on goal and 36 assists are second best in school history in a season.

Senior Chelsey Williams finished the season with six goals, five assists and 17 points, all of which are tied for the tops on the team. She fired 30 shots and landed 17 on goal for a .567 shot on goal percentage. The All-Sun Belt Second Team selection recorded a hat trick in a 4-0 victory over Austin Peay and recorded a career-high three-goal performance that earned her Sun Belt Conference Student-Athlete of the Week. Williams finished her career atop the points leaderboard with 77 and goals scored with 33. She also finished her career second in game-winning goals with nine, assists with 15, shots with 167 and shots on goal with 104.

Senior Alissa Jones finished the season par for course with Williams as she had six goals, five assists and 17 points. She fired 85 shots and landed 42 on goal, which was a new single-season record for a .494 shot on goal percentage. The All-Sun Belt First Team selection set a career-record for game-winning goals with 12, assists with 17, shots on goal with 104 and shots with 245. She is second in career points with 69 and goals scored with 26.

Brittany Yoder, Brooke McKee and Robyn-Anne Whittaker were a few freshmen that helped on the offensive side of the field combining for nine goals and seven assists. McKee finished the year with four goals and assists, Whittaker finished with three goals and two assists and Yoder finished with two goals, one assist. Yoder was named Sun Belt Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for her two-goal performance in a 2-1 win over UT Martin.

Troy had five players selected to All-Sun Belt teams, which matches the most in program history. Jones and Lewis were named first team, while Williams, Jasmine Fahrnbauer and newcomer Haley Roberson were named second team. Fahrnbauer was also selected to the Sun Belt All-Tournament Team.
