Troy Soccer Hosts Pair of Conference Opponents

TROY, Alabama – The Troy soccer team plays host to a pair of conference opponents this weekend beginning with Texas State on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by Appalachian State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Troy Soccer Complex.

Friday's game against Texas State will help raise breast cancer awareness, as Troy soccer t-shirts will be $15 with a percentage of the proceeds donated to cancer research.

Troy (9-3, 2-1 Sun Belt) has won four out of its last five games, including two shutouts against Sun Belt schools on the road. Chelsey Williams leads the team with 11 points on four goals and three assists, while Alissa Jones and Brooke McKee are tied with 10 points each. Jones has four goals and two assists, while McKee has three goals and four assists.

Mikki Lewis (7-3) has 43 saves on the season, has posted five shutouts and has only allowed seven goals all season. The Troy defense has only allowed 108 shots in 12 games, which leads the conference and has a 0.67 GAA that also tops the Sun Belt.

The Trojans are averaging six more shots per game than their opponents and have outshot their opponents 183-108. Jones leads the team and the Sun Belt with 57 shots, 4.75 per game.

Texas State (8-3, 2-1 Sun Belt) comes off a loss at Appalachian State last weekend, but defeated Houston, 2-0, on the road in August to open their season. The Bobcats have won seven out of their last eight games and have outscored their opponents 20-11 in that stretch. Lauren Prater leads the Bobcats with 18 points, eight goals and two assists on the season.

Appalachian State (6-3-3, 2-0-1 Sun Belt) has outscored Sun Belt opponents 8-2 in just three games. The Mountaineers' Merlin Beckwith won Sun Belt Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week with a one goal, one assist performance against Texas State last weekend.

Texas State leads the all-time series over Troy 3-1. The two teams played twice last season and Texas State won the first meeting last season 2-0, but Troy earned their first win over the Bobcats in the semi-finals in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The first meeting between Troy and Appalachian State was last year with the Mountaineers earning a 3-2 victory in double overtime.
