Women's Basketball Opens Practice
10/6/2015 2:03:00 PM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Alabama – Coming off of one of the most successful seasons in program history, work has officially begun for the Troy women's basketball team as its looks to improve even more in 2015-16.
The Trojans officially opened team practice with a two-hour session on Monday evening, before returning to Trojan Arena for a second practice on Tuesday morning.
Troy went 20-11 and made a postseason appearance in the WBI a season ago, the first 20-win season and postseason berth in nearly two decades for the program. However, with that season in the past, the Trojans are looking for more in 2015-16.
Throughout the offseason, fourth-year head coach Chanda Rigby has said the team's goal is no longer playing in the postseason, it's playing well and advancing through postseason.
"These first practices are very exciting," Rigby said. "We had a lot of good players out there and a lot of good surprises. I'd say one of the biggest surprises was the contribution our post players had in scoring. In the past, it's been mostly guard play in my system, but our posts are already rising up and scoring well."
The Trojans return six players from last year's team, including four post players in Lauren Day, Kristen Emerson, Caitlyn Ramirez and Dajia Williams. They join a pair of senior guard returners, Rachel Reid and two-time All-Sun Belt selection Ashley Beverly Kelley, who have stepped into leadership roles for Troy.
"They are good leaders who are learning to be great leaders," Rigby said of two leaders. "They do a lot of leadership training, and are actually learning the tactical means of how to lead a basketball team."
Joining the six returners are eight newcomers, the most for a Rigby coached team at Troy. The eight include two true freshmen and six junior college transfers, one coming in as a sophomore.
"There were some bumps because they just aren't used to things yet," Rigby said. "They've got new terminology flying around, a new pace of the game, but they are all ball players."
The Trojans have just over a month until their season opener when West Alabama visits Trojan Arena on Nov. 13 at 12 p.m.
Between now and then, Troy will host Basketball Fan Day on Tailgate Terrace before the Trojans' homecoming football game against Idaho on Oct. 17.
Troy will also host the second annual Trojan Madness on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Trojan Arena at 7 p.m.
