TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – The Trojan cross country teams closed out their regular-season schedule with several notable performances at the Crimson Classic, which was hosted by Alabama, on Friday, October 16, at the Harry Pritchett Running Park.
Most notably, sophomore Sara Zylstra continued her recent streak of success by leading the women's team through the finish line in another sub-19-minute 5K – her second consecutive race as Troy's No. 1 runner. She was followed by senior Julia Ostendorf, who finished a few seconds behind Zysltra with a final time of 19:00.25. Troy's third runner, junior Samantha Smith, ran a personal-best time of 19:14.8.
"On the women's side, with the exception of a few, we competed well," cross country head coach Elliott Blount said. "The results reflect just how small our margin of error is and the importance of everyone's role in the team's overall performance. With the men, I'll have to look back at the training to try and see if there are clues there for why we haven't been able to put it together. It's my job as the coach to get these guys ready in two weeks' time."
Freshmen finished as runners one through five for Troy as the men's team struggled to stick together during the race. In just his third collegiate meet, Kyle Norris took the top spot for the Trojans as he cruised to a personal-best 8K time of 26:38.72. Brennan Garriques was unable to clinch a fourth-consecutive race as Troy's top finisher and completed the course behind Norris in 27:16.52. Zachary Bias arrived next to round out the Trojans' top three.
Oklahoma State took home both the men's and women's team trophies, dominating the field in a blaze of orange and black. Led by Cerake Geberkidane's time of 23:40.78, Oklahoma State placed five men in the top ten to secure the win in Tuscaloosa. Geberkidane was the only person to break 24 minutes out of a field of 217 men.
On the women's side, Natalie Baker threatened to take home another individual title for Oklahoma State, but was bested by Texas A&M's Karis Jochen, who finished in 16:46.23.
Troy cross country will be back in action at the Sun Belt Conference Cross Country Championships on Sunday, November 1, at Nash Battlefield Farm in Atlanta, Georgia.
