Troy Cross Country Gears Up for Crimson Classic
10/15/2015 11:04:00 AM | Cross Country
TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – Troy's cross country teams are slated to compete at their largest meet of the season this Friday, October 16, at the University of Alabama's Crimson Classic, which will attract more than 100 teams this year. The women will start the evening for Troy over 5K at 5 p.m., followed by the men's 8K at 5:30 p.m.
Both squads will race in the "University" division against teams from the SEC, Sun Belt, Pac-12, Big Ten and more at the Harry Pritchett Running Course, which will also serve as the site of the 2015 NCAA Division I South Regional Cross Country Championships which will be held on Friday, November 13. Â
"This is an opportunity to compete against some of the best competition in the south, execute a race plan, and exhibit mental toughness," cross country head coach Elliott Blount said. "If we can match the intensity this race fosters, we'll be in much better shape for Sun Belt."
Friday's competition will mark the return of several of Troy's runners who took a couple weeks off from racing to sharpen their training and benefit from extra recovery time. Â Junior Mikayla Hodges, who finished first for the Trojans in two of the three meets she competed in this season, will toe the line for the first time since September 19.
Others returning to competition include juniors Keaton Wallace and Samantha Smith and freshman Krystin Guirey. They will be joined by sophomore Sarah Zylstra, who had a career day at the JSU Foothills Invitational last weekend, senior Julia Ostendorf, juniors Katrina and Kristina Bokenfohr, sophomore Naomi Sheppard and junior Rae Leach.
On the men's side, freshman Brad Dixon will compete for the first time since his collegiate debut at the season opener, where he finished as Troy's No. 2 runner. In addition, freshmen Austin Gray, Kyle Norris Zachary Bias and Sawyer Sprung will return to action on fresh legs after taking some time off from racing.
Brennan Garriques will also be in the mix this weekend to vie once again for top honors – the freshman has crossed the line first for the Trojans in all three of the meets he has raced in. The men's crew will also travel sophomores Dylan Ogburn and Eric Schueller and junior Tim Bulger.
The Crimson Classic will be the Trojans' final meet before the Sun Belt Conference Cross Country Championships, which will be hosted on Sunday, November 1, at Nash Battlefield Farm in Atlanta, Ga.
