Track and Field Opens Season at UAB Blazer Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Troy track and field team began competition on Friday at the UAB Blazer Invitational. Several returning athletes competed along with a few newcomers to kick off the 2015 indoor season.

The Trojan women wrapped up Friday night with three runner's finishing in the top-four  in the women's 5000-meter Invitational.. Julia Ostendorf picked up a second place finish with a time of 18:17.23. Mikayla Hodges placed third and Samantha Smith finished in fourth, just seconds short of Ostendorf.

Freshman Naomi Sheppard finished the women's 1000-meter run in 3:16.01 in her first track and field race for the Trojans. Erika Kulp and Kristina Bokenfohr placed right behind Sheppard with times of 3:16.50 and 3:29.17, respectively.

Troy's women's distance medley team composed of Marsel Mosley, Paige McMillian, Alyssa Staubach and Sara Zylstra placed fourth in Friday's race with a time of 13:11.10.

For the Trojan men, freshman Joesph Giese placed third in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:35.09. Shakiel Parker completed the race in 2:46.12, while Madison Estes was just shy of Parker's time, finishing in 2:48.88.

Chaun Lynn was the lone Troy competitor in the men's 500-meter run, and picked up a twelfth place finish with a time of 1:06.46.

The Trojans also saw their hard work pay off in the men's field events Friday. Zach Douglas placed fifth in the men's weight throw with a distance of 17.09 meters. Myles Charley completed the men's triple jump with a 14.71 meter jump and a sixth place finish.

Competition will commence with the women's 5000-meter run, women's long jump, and men's shot put all starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.
