Person, Bilbo Lift Trojans Past UT Arlington, 71-66

TROY, Alabama – Freshman Wesley Person and junior Chris Bilbo posted career nights as the Troy men's basketball team defeated UT Arlington, 71-66, at Trojan Arena Monday night for the Trojans' first conference win of the season.

"That was a hard fought win," said head coach Phil Cunningham. "To our guy's credit, they never gave up. This will be a reference for the rest of the season, if we are ever back in that situation again. This will be a reference to never give up. We fought there in those last minutes to win the game. I thought we were really aggressive on both ends and attacked the boards."

The Trojans (6-6, 1-2) closed out the final 2:35 on a 9-0 run, making five of their last six buckets. Troy's aggressive defense forced UT Arlington to shoot 2-of-13 from the floor, including a 2:50 scoring drought.

Person, who set a career-high in points for the second straight game, led the Trojans with 31 points. He ended the night shooting 11-of-16 from the floor highlighted by his 5-of-6 showing from beyond the arc. Bilbo also tallied a career-best with 17 points, shooting 6-of-14 from the floor, while dishing out three assists.

Coming out of the break, Troy trailed 36-34 after back-and-forth play with UT Arlington. The Mavs went on a 7-0 run, while holding the Trojans scoreless for five minutes and 13 seconds. Its run allowed UT Arlington to take a 16-10 lead with 9:24 left in the first. The Trojans quickly bounced back as they went on a 9-0 run to regain the lead at 18-16. Troy and UTA traded baskets to end the half.

UT Arlington (8-4, 2-1) was on a five-game win streak coming into Trojan Arena, including a blemish-free conference record after a close 62-61 at Georgia Southern and a convincing 99-87 win against South Alabama. Johnny Hill paced the Mavs with a team-high 19 points. He also reeled in a team-high seven rebounds.

Entering the game, the Mavericks topped the Sun Belt in 3-point FG percentage. The Trojans held them to 18.2 percent from beyond the arc, including 10 percent (1-of-10) in the second half.

On the night, the Trojans shot 53.2 percent from the floor, courtesy of a 68.2 percent showing in the second half. Troy shot 50 percent from 3-point range, tying its best of the season.

Troy hits the road this weekend as it travels to Atlanta to face Georgia State at GSU Sports Arena. Tip off between the Trojans and Panthers is slated for 1 p.m. (CT).
