Person Shines but Troy Struggles at UL Lafayette
1/3/2015 10:41:00 PM | Basketball (M)
LAFAYETTE, Louisiana – Freshman Wesley Person paced the Trojans with a career-high 28 points, however, Troy was unable to find enough momentum as it fell to UL Lafayette at the Cajundome, 91-64.
The Trojans (5-6, 0-2) trailed at the break, 39-31, in large part to the Ragin Cajuns' 11-3 run to end the half. Coming out of the first half, the momentum continued to flow for UL Lafayette as it spurted out on a 9-3 run to give it a 48-34 lead. The Ragin' Cajuns were able to shoot 6-of-6 to give them a 17-point lead with just under 16 minutes to play.
It's hot shooting continued, as UL Lafayette was 10-of-12 to open the second half, including 4-of-4 from beyond the arc. Troy was unable to muster much as it couldn't chip away at the Cajuns' lead. In the second half, ULL shot 67.7 percent (21-of-31) from the field, including 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from beyond the three-point line.
Person's career-night consisted of a 9-of-15 mark from the floor, including 3-of-7 from downtown. The freshman was also 7-of-9 from the charity stripe. Chris Bilbo, who tallied a game-high four assists, was the only other Trojan to reach double figures as he shot 4-of-7 on his way to 10 points.
To start the game, Troy quickly sunk both its shots to take a 4-0 lead; it's only lead of the night. The Trojans spread the love on the court, as all five starters were able to get on the board within just eight minutes of play.
The Trojans were able to tie the game up at 21 with 7:27 left to play in the first, in large part to Person, who got fouled and was able to sink all three shots from the charity stripe. In the first, Troy was able to hold UL Lafayette to 20 percent (2-of-10) from beyond the arc.
On the night, Troy shot 44.4 (24-of-54) percent from the field. The Trojan bench tallied six points to the Cajuns' 10.
UL Lafayette (8-5, 2-0) was led by Jay Wright, who tallied a team-high 20 points. The Ragin' Cajuns had three other players with fifteen or more points, including Shawn Long (18), Brian Williams (15) and Kasey Shepard (19). Long also tallied a team-high six rebounds.
Next up, Troy quickly returns home as it faces UT Arlington at Trojan Arena on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
