Trojans Snap Sun Belt Leader’s 4-Game Win Streak

TROY, Alabama – The Troy (7-8, 2-4) men's basketball team sunk 10-of-11 free throws in the final two minutes of play to hold off Georgia Southern (11-4, 4-2), 75-71, at Trojan Arena Saturday. Kelton Ford had a career-night as he paced the Trojans with 26 points.
With 2:16 to play the Trojans trailed 65-64. Ford gave Troy its final lead of the night as he sank a pair of free throws. While the Trojans had a showing from the charity stripe, the Eagles were struggling to find momentum on the offensive side of the ball, as it shot 2-of-9 to allow Troy to hold on to the lead.
Georgia Southern's Jelani Hewitt made a long 3-pointer with six seconds left to make it a one-possession game, 73-71. Abdul-Aleem went to the line to give Troy a two-possession lead. Time expired as Troy snapped Georgia Southern's four-game win streak.
Ford ended the night shooting 6-of-9 from downtown, doubling his season 3-point total. He also shot 6-of-7 from the charity stripe, including 3-of-4 in the final two minutes of play. Musa Abdul-Aleem sparked the Trojans with 23 points off the bench, as he shot 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Kevin Thomas earned his eighth career double-double as he reeled in a game-high 12 boards and tallied 10 points, shooting 4-of-7 from the floor. Wesley Person chipped seven for the Trojans, while grabbing a career-high six rebounds.
In the first half of play, Troy quickly jumped out to a 12-3 lead, as it opened the game with a 10-0 run. Georgia Southern struggled early, shooting 1-of-8 to start. The Eagles stayed in the game with small runs throughout the half. To close out the half, Georgia Southern went on a 10-3 run to make it a one-point game as it trailed 40-39.
Coming out of the break, Georgia Southern jumped out to a 50-46 lead at is went on an 11-6 run. Momentum continued to flow to the Eagles, as they went on a 6-0 run with back-to-back trey's from Hewitt. Troy found a late surge as it went on its own 7-0 run to take a 61-58 lead with just under seven minutes to play.
Georgia Southern was led by Hewitt, who posted a game-high 28 points. Hewitt, who leads the Sun Belt in 3-pointers per game, shot 6-of-15 from downtown. Trent Wiedeman led the Eagles on the glass with seven boards.
After shooting 7-of-15 from downtown in the first half, Georgia Southern ended the night shooting 10-of-32, a mere 17.6 percent (3-of-17) in the second half.
In the game, Troy shot 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the floor, in large part to its showing from 3-point range, in which the Trojans shot 52.2 percent (12-of-23). The Trojans out-rebounded the Eagles 37-36. Troy forced 14 Georgia Southern turnovers as it outscored the Eagles 15-10 in points off turnovers.
The Trojans continue their homestand as the other Sun Belt newcomer, Appalachian State, visits Trojan Arena on Monday, January 19. Tip off between the Trojans and Mountaineers is set for 7:30 p.m.
