BRYAN, Texas – The Troy women's golf team is in ninth place following Monday's opening round of The "Mo"morial hosted by Texas A&M at the Traditions Golf Club.
The Trojans carded 11 birdies as a team over the opening 18 holes, second only to Florida State's 17. Senior Langley Vannoy is the clubhouse leader for the Trojans as she sits tied for 15th place following a 3-over 75.
Vannoy finished her opening round with five birdies on her scorecard, the second most of any player in the field. Troy's top player last fall, Vannoy opened her round with a pair of bogeys before sinking a birdie on her third hole. Following a par, she alternated birdies and bogeys on her next four holes before finishing 1-over on the back nine. Vannoy added a pair of birdies around two bogeys and a double-bogey after making the turn.
Fátima Fernández Cano finished one birdie behind Vannoy with four for the third most in the opening round of the tournament. The reigning Sun Belt Conference champion finished the day 4-over and is tied for 26th place.
Taylor McGraw shot a 7-over 59 to finish the day tied for 47th place, while Brooke Spinks and Sydney Conrad are tied for 50th place following an 8-over round.
No. 17 Auburn leads the 11-team field after shooting a 3-over 291 in the opening round. Houston sits four shots back while Florida State (+8), Kentucky (+10) and UTSA (+11) round out the top five. Florida State's Kayla Jones is the individual leader after day one following a 3-under 69.
The Trojans will be back on the course Tuesday for the second round of the tournament.
