TROY, Ala. – Troy, the defending Sun Belt Conference women's golf champions, opens its 2014 fall season Monday at The "Mo"morial hosted by Texas A&M at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
Troy returns everyone from its Sun Belt championship team, including Sun Belt individual champion Fátima Fernández Cano. Now a sophomore, Cano will be joined by four seniors at The "Mo"morial in Taylor McGraw, Brooke Spinks, Sydney Conrad and Langley Vannoy
"The ladies are very excited to play and pick up where they left off last year," head coach Bart Barnes said. "This is a new event for us and it will give us an outstanding opportunity to see some high-level competition with several teams ranked in the top 50."
Troy will be pared with Houston and Tulsa during the opening round and will tee off at 8:45 a.m. on the back nine. The rest of the field is made up of UTSA, Auburn, TCU, Florida State, Texas A&M, Kentucky, Baylor, ULM and Stephen F. Austin.
"We've had a pretty productive offseason," Barnes said. "We had a couple ladies that needed to go home to rest and get healthy and we had a couple who played all summer and are in midseason form so to speak. I don't see a lot of rust when we practice and play."
The Trojans posted the two-lowest rounds in school history last year and the lowest 54-hole score in school history. Cano, the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, finished the 2013-14 season with a 75.56 stroke average, the second lowest in school history; she shot a remarkable 74.90 in the final round of tournaments.
"If you looked at her progress as a freshman last season it was remarkable," Barnes said. "The biggest thing for her is that she matured over the whole season. She became more consistent as the year went on and didn't let a bad round effect a whole tournament. She went home to Spain over the summer and played a lot. She furthered her maturity process and is a very determined player."
Troy's four seniors have proved to be key building blocks in the progression of the program under Barnes and former head coach and now Director of Golf Matt Terry. Vannoy led the Trojans with a 77.50 stroke average in the fall before injuries hampered her spring schedule, while McGraw and Spinks both had outstanding spring campaigns with 76.68 and 77.21 averages, respectively. Conrad played in five tournaments last year and took advantage of her opportunities as her rounds counted towards the team score a team-high 87.5 percent of the time.
"Our four seniors have contributed so much to this program," Barnes said. "I went through the recruiting process with them when I was an assistant and to see them as seniors now is kind of remarkable. It's like I have four assistant coaches on the course with me."
Barnes, the 2014 Sun Belt Coach of the Year, returns for his second year after leading the Trojans to a 98-67-2 record last year and the program's first berth in the NCAA Division I Championships. Barnes guided the Trojans to a 94-48-2 record prior to the NCAA East Regional.
About The "Mo"morial
Played on the par-72, 6,206-yard course at the Traditions Club, The Texas A&M women's golf "Mo"Morial tournament is named after former Aggie women's golf great Monica Welsh. Welsh, who tragically died in an automobile accident in 1992, was a four-year letter winner for the Aggies from 1978-1982. She was a two-time TAIAW all-state selection and set the then-record for low competitive round (68) in 1981 at the TAIAW State Championship.
