GLENCOE, Alabama – Troy finished off a convincing victory at the Chris Banister Golf Classic on Tuesday as the Trojans shot a 4-over 292 en route to a 16-stroke victory at the Silver Lakes Golf Course. Three Trojans placed in the top 10 led by individual champion Fátima Fernández Cano and runner-up Langley Vannoy.
"I am really pleased with the way we played today," head coach Bart Barnes said. "We had a small margin going into today and we knew we'd have to play well to hold off some teams and for our own sake to build some momentum. It was exciting to see us make some birdies as we made the turn and down the stretch. They really showed me what they were made of."
Troy carried a three-shot lead over Morehead State into Tuesday's final round; however, when the dust settled it was Troy with a 16-shot victory over Morehead and a 20-shot advantage over third-place Samford. The Trojans were 30 shots ahead of Jacksonville State and 53 strokes better than UAB and South Alabama.
Cano finished 1-over for the tournament after shooting even in the final round. The sophomore's 2-under in the second round was the only under-par round among the entire field. The title is the second for Cano in her last four events after she won the Sun Belt Conference individual crown last year.
Vannoy's second-place finish was her best since she won the ULM Fred Marx Invitational during the fall of her freshman campaign. The senior matched Cano's 72 on Tuesday to finish one stroke back with a 2-over 218 for the tournament.
Cano and Vannoy did most of their work on the par 5s as Cano was 4-under for the tournament and Vannoy was 1-under. Cano finished with 10 birdies over the three rounds – the third most in the field – and Vannoy was second, behind teammate Taylor McGraw, with 36 pars.
McGraw charged up the leaderboard on the final day as she moved up seven spots into a tie for 10th after shooting a 2-over 74 in the final round; it was her fourth top-10 finish dating back to last spring.
"They looked so comfortable on the course and that's what you're looking for, especially in a final round with the tournament on the line," Barnes said. "They embraced the challenge and almost seemed calmer today. They are experienced conference champions and they enjoy the competition. They were going to go and take the victory and not have it handed to them."
Becca Horner turned in her best performance of the tournament as she shot a 2-over 74 after scores in the 80s her first two rounds. Horner's final round performance placed her in a tie for 31st place while Kalyn Hudson carded an 81 on Tuesday and she tied for 35th overall.
The Trojans will look to keep their momentum rolling in a couple of weeks when they travel to Jacksonville, Florida for the JU Classic on Oct. 13-14.
