COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Troy men's golf team completed its rise up the Jack Nicklaus Invitational leaderboard during Monday's final round on the Scarlet Course at the Ohio State Golf Club. The Trojans finished third in the 12-team field while sophomore Luke Moser tied for sixth individually.
The Trojans, who carded the lowest score of the second round, shot a 4-over in Monday's final round; second only to team champion Ohio State's 1-over. Troy entered the final round in a three-way tie for fifth place after finishing the opening round in 11th place.
"I'm excited to see what we are going to do at our next event because our guys are getting more and more confident each round," head coach Matt Terry said. "We led the field in birdies which is good because that course forces you to make a lot of mistakes. We're closer than we've been in a while to where we want to be."
Moser finished 2-over for the tournament after shooting a 1-over 72 on Monday, which included a remarkable turnaround. He opened his round 5-over par after the first four holes, but bounced back with three-straight birdies to make the turn at 2-over. Moser added a pair of birdies around a bogey on the back nine to finish at 1-over.
Jake Tucker closed strong for the Trojans with three-straight birdies from No. 14-16 to close at 3-under for the day. Tucker's solid finish was enough to move him into tie for 11th place at 4-over for the three days.
Moser led the field with 14 birdies over the three rounds while Tucker was third with 12 and Phillip Brennan was seventh with 11. The Trojans finished with 49 birdies as a team, 10 more than Ohio State's second-place total.
Brennan and Tolver Dozier both shot 3-over on the day and finished tied for 22nd and 43rd, respectively, while Jared Bettcher was 6-over and finished in a tie for 37th.
The Trojans return to action in a couple weeks when they travel to Duluth, Georgia on October 13-14 for the Auto Trader Collegiate Classic.
