MONROE, Louisiana – Justin Manton kicked a 29-yard field goal with 2:08 remaining to lift ULM past Troy 22-20 Saturday night at Malone Stadium.
Brandon Silvers gave Troy the lead, 20-19, with his third touchdown pass of the night with 7:36 to play in the game. Silvers found Chandler Worthy on a fade route in the back corner of the end zone.
On the ensuing possession, ULM (3-1, 2-0 Sun Belt) faced first-and-goal from the Troy 4-yard line before the Trojan defense held. Manton booted his third field goal of the night to put the Warhawks in front.
Silvers completed back-to-back 12-yard passes on Troy's (0-5, 0-1) next possession to get the Trojans to midfield. Following a sack and an incomplete pass, Silvers hit Khary Franklin for five yards to set up fourth-and-11. Silvers' pass to K.D. Edenfield fell incomplete with a defender draped on him.
Silvers finished 23-of-34 for a career-best 270 yards to go along with his three touchdowns. Worthy caught two of the scoring passes and finished with 66 yards on six grabs. Bryan Holmes had a team-high seven catches for 97 yards and a score.
Jamal Stadom had a big game for the Trojan defense as he finished with seven tackles and a pair of sacks; Tyler Roberts added a sack while Mark Wilson and Billy Dobbs split a sack.
Pete Thomas completed 28-of-43 passes for 328 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the Warhawks. Rashon Ceaser had 12 catches for 121 yards while Ajalen Holley had five catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns.
Louisiana jumped out to a 13-0 lead as Manton hit a pair of field goals around a Thomas 64-yard touchdown pass to Holley.
Troy responded both offensively and defensively to take a 14-13 lead into half. The Trojan defense forced three straight three-and-outs to end the half and Femi Odaibo intercepted his third pass of the season.
Offensively, Holmes capped a 10-play, 98-yard drive with a 19-yard touchdown reception and Worthy caught a 4-yard touchdown pass at the end of the half. The 98-yard drive tied the longest drive by a Troy offense since the Trojans moved to the FBS level in 2001.
Holley gave the Warhawks a 19-14 lead late in the third quarter with a 15-yard touchdown reception.
Both teams struggled to run the ball as the Trojans finished with 81 yards on 32 carries and the Warhawks finished with just 29 yards on 33 carries. ULM outgained Troy 357-351 for the game and was not called for a single penalty all game (Troy had three penalties for 45 yards).
Troy is off next weekend before hosting New Mexico State on Oct. 11 in Veterans Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is schedule for 2 p.m.
Troy Head Coach Larry Blakeney:
Opening Statement…
"I knew it was going to be a tough game. I thought we could've won it but ULM certainly could to and they did a good job. There a well-coached bunch of guys. If they (media) really ranked them by who gets the most out of there program, kids and coaches, Todd Berry would be the guy that is ranked near the top. They did everything they had to do to win and we fell short a little bit. Hopefully we could build upon our loss and sometimes you have to do that when you haven't won."
On the defensive performance…
"I was really proud of that (settling down after giving up 13 points early). It looked like we found a couple of things, a couple of defensive calls to match there formation. Our kids played hard and they tried hard. They were able to make some plays on the ball and tackle guys in the open space. I think there was a lot of improvement on that and we certainly were tested because they scattered us everywhere."
On the offensive not getting much going…
"You got to be able to get it out of there (inside the 10-yard line), whether its run, pass or trick them. The best way to get it out is to knock them off the ball, getting two, three or four yards per carry. That's something we struggled with mightily, and everyone knows we need to work on. But there's a lot of things we do that opens other avenues up for us and gave us a chance to win tonight."
