Â
Troy head coach Larry Blakeney, who announced his retirement to the team earlier this week, earned his 176th career win to tie legendary Auburn head coach Shug Jordan for the third-most wins by a coach in the history of the state of Alabama.
Â
The Trojans (1-5, 1-1 Sun Belt) running game sparked the offense as they tallied 360 yards rushing, which marks Troy's fifth 300-yard rushing game in its FBS era (2001-present). Brandon Burks had a career-long 53 run, and totaled a team-high 176 yards on the ground on just 10 carries.
Â
Troy's defense was a force to be reckoned with as they recorded four sacks and forced four turnovers. Prior to Saturday, the Aggies had not allowed a sack all season in six games, which led the nation.
Â
The Trojans took a 7-0 lead on the opening drive and never looked back. Troy scored 10 unanswered points in the first quarter with a 12-yard touchdown run from Silvers and a 28-yard field goal from Ryan Kay.
Â
The Aggies (2-5, 1-3) were able to get on the board with a 53-yard run by Larry Rose III, which cut the Trojans lead to 10-7. Chandler Worthy responded quickly as he took the ensuing kickoff to the house on an 89-yard touchdown return.
Â
Nearing the end of the second quarter, the Aggies took over on the 36-yard line after a fumble by the Trojans. However, the Troy defense came up with a big stop when JaQuadrian Lewis picked off the first pass of his career at the 6-yard line to give Troy the ball back.
Â
Jordan Chunn got in on the action on Troy's opening drive of the second half as he extended Troy's lead to 27-10 on a 2-yard run. Chunn ended the day with 29 rushing yards and two touchdowns, which moved him into sole possession of eighth in Troy's record books with 18 career rushing touchdowns.
Â
New Mexico State refused to back down as quarterback Tyler Rogers connected with Jerrel Brown on a 30-yard touchdown pass to narrow Troy's lead to 27-17 with 5:28 remaining in the third quarter.
Â
Troy's defense responded. With 9:19 remaining in the contest, Tyler Roberts and Jamal Stadom forced back-to-back sacks with Roberts forcing Rogers to fumble on the second. Stadom recovered the fumble, his second recovery of the night, on the Aggies 26-yard line. Chunn made the Aggies pay for the mistake as he took it to the end zone, earning his second touchdown of the day to give Troy a commanding 34-17 lead.
Â
The Aggies cut the lead back to 10 points with 5:04 remaining in the game on an 11-yard pass from Rogers to Teldrick Morgan.
Â
Troy sealed the deal with a 5 play, 47-yard drive as Chandler Worthy, who had 180 all-purpose yards, caught a 35-yard flip pass from Silvers as the final score of the night.
Â
Silvers ended the night 23-of-30 for 211 yards with one touchdown. He set the Troy FBS record with 119 consecutive pass attempts without an interception to start his career.
Â
Next week, the Trojans will take on another newcomer to the Sun Belt, Appalachian State (1-5, 0-2). Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. and the game will be broadcast by ESPN3.
