KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Troy men's golf team sits in a tie for sixth place following Friday's opening round of The Invitational at Kiawah after shooting a 9-over 297 on The Ocean Course.
Sophomore Jared Bettcher finished strong for the Trojans as he carded a 3-under on the back nine to finish his round at 1-under 71. Bettcher, who is tied for ninth place, sat 3-over heading into No. 11 and then proceeded to hole out on the par-5 No. 11 for eagle and sink birdies on No. 12, No. 14 and No. 16.
Troy sat at even par and in second place after 12 holes, but the Trojans struggled to close out the round as they combined for four double-bogeys and five bogeys over the final six holes after just one double-bogey and seven bogeys over the first 12 holes. The 15th hole proved to be Troy's nemesis as the Trojans were 7-over as a team on the hole.
"All in all we didn't play to bad and we are just six shots out of second place," head coach Matt Terry said. "We didn't make enough putts and we didn't get off to a great start, but we had it going after that and our guys knew it. We'll make our adjustments and go out tomorrow and hopefully play a complete round."
Luke Moser's return to the lineup was a successful one as the sophomore finished with a 3-over 75 after playing in just four events last season. Moser led the Trojans at the turn at 2-under after seven pars and two birdies on the front nine.
Moser and Phillip Brennan are tied for 27th place with 36 holes to play. Brennan sank a birdie on No. 9 and played 13 holes at even par.
Tolver Dozier sank back-to-back birdies on No. 2 and No. 3 and followed with a birdied on No. 8 to make the turn at 1-under. He finished his day 4-over and is tied for 37th place, while Jake Tucker shot a 6-over and is tied for 52nd.
South Florida has a commanding 9-shot lead over College of Charleston, while Duke, Kentucky and Georgia Southern round out the top five. Troy is just six shots back of second place and Bettcher is four shots back of Kentucky's Cooper Musselman for the individual lead.
The Trojans will tee off at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the second round of the three-round event and will be paired with Kentucky and Georgia Southern.
