ATLANTA – Troy senior Tolver Dozier wrapped up play at the U.S. Amateur Championship on Tuesday at the Atlanta Athletic Club; it was his second appearance in the U.S. Amateur in the past three years.
Dozier shot a 76 in Monday's opening round and followed with a 79 in the final round of stroke play; the top 64 competitors advanced to match play to decide the champion.
"It was an awesome learning experience," Dozier said. "The USGA is notorious for their tough setups and it was one of the few times that no matter how you play, you still feel that you got better from the experience and everything you learned. You can just miss by a yard and it turns a birdie opportunity into a bogey. I had some chances to make a run and I felt like I played a lot better than my previous time playing in the U.S. Amateur."
Dozier got off to a hot start with birdies on two of his first three holes of his opening round. He went on to finish 5-over on the back nine and 3-over on the front nine. In his second round, the Dothan, Ala., native birdied No. 4 en route to a 3-over front nine. Dozier worked par on five holes on the back nine and shot 4-over.
"I enjoyed being able to watch him play in the biggest amateur event in golf," Troy head coach Matt Terry said. "The things I got to see made me really excited for the upcoming season. It really got my juices flowing watching him compete. I'm glad everyone is back on campus and ready to get to work for the 2014-15 season."
Dozier played in nine tournaments for the Trojans this past season and finished with a 74.7 stroke average over 27 rounds. He turned in a pair of top-20 finishes with his best coming at the Pinetree Intercollegiate where he tied for sixth after a 1-over 217.
