TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's tennis program and head coach Rawia Elsisi announced the addition of three student-athletes to the 2014-15 roster on Wednesday.
In addition to four returners from last year's squad, the Trojans roster will feature newcomers Julia Albuquerque, Sanae Ohta and Linnea Skymberg.
"Having a new and strong class of recruits is very critical to our women's tennis program this coming season," Elsisi said. "I am looking forward to the arrival of our three newcomers to Troy this August and them becoming part of the Troy tennis family. This is a group of highly motivated young student-athletes and they will add depth to the team lineup in both singles and doubles."
Albuquerque, a native of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, will come to Troy as a freshman. She reached a career-high ranking of No.4 in the Brazilian junior's rankings.
"We are exited to have Julia Albuquerque on our team," Elsisi said. "Julia will be the youngest freshman on the team but with a strong national tennis background in Brazil."
Ohta, a native of Tokyo, reached a career-high ITF junior singles ranking of No. 180. She is currently the No. 66 ranked singles player in Japan and the No. 45 ranked doubles player in Japan. She has also spent time during her career in the WTA singles and doubles rankings.
"Sanae Ohta has a very strong work ethics plus a national and international tennis background," Elsisi said. "Her national and international tennis experience will add strength to our tennis program."
Skymberg, a native of Akers Styckebruk, Sweden, reached a career-high national ranking of No. 7 in Sweden, including a No. 1 ranking in her region. She was one of three girls admitted to the Lidkoping Tennis Academy, the Swedish Tennis Association's national upper secondary school. She played at the No. 2 position for Lidkoping's women's team in the top division in Sweden.
"Linnea Skymberg is a very talented young athlete and comes with strong leadership skills," Elsisi said. "She grew up playing tennis and handball and will add a lot to our team."
The three newcomers will mix with four returners for the Trojans, including Anja Cosovic, Brooke Durden, Margot De Haan and Trang Huynh. All four were sophomores in 2013-14 when the Trojans advanced to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Championships.
Huynh posted an 18-4 singles record, mostly at No. 1, and was a first team All-Sun Belt selection. Cosovic posted an 18-3 singles record and was a second team All-Sun Belt selection. The pair went 18-2 in doubles play and earned a first team All-Sun Belt selection.
Durden posted a 14-13 singles record in 2013-14, including a stretch of four wins in five matches in late March when the Trojans were in the midst of a seven-match winning streak. De Haan, posted a 10-13 singles record a season ago, including three wins in regular-season Sun Belt matches, plus a win in Troy's quarterfinal win at the Sun Belt Championships.
